X-Ray Urgent Care

The Cost of X-Rays: Urgent Care vs. Emergency Room

When faced with the need for an X-ray, whether due to a sports injury or a sudden health concern, understanding your options can save you both time and money. X-rays are a critical tool in modern medicine, offering a glimpse beneath the skin to diagnose fractures, infections, and other conditions. With advancements in technology, particularly digital X-rays, Vitality Urgent Care has made the process more efficient and cost-effective than ever. Let’s break down why choosing Vitality Urgent Care for your X-ray needs is a smart, budget-friendly decision.

What Are X-Rays Used For?

X-rays can image almost any part of the body, including bones, teeth, and chest, to diagnose various conditions. Digital X-rays, which are used at Vitality Urgent Care, offer a clearer image and faster results than traditional X-rays, enhancing the accuracy and speed of diagnosis.

  • Upper Extremities: This includes fingers, hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, humerus, and radius. Whether it’s a sports injury, a fall, or chronic pain, our X-rays can pinpoint the issue accurately.
  • Lower Extremities: We cover toes, foot, ankle, leg, knee, tibia, and femur. From sprains and fractures to more complex conditions, our team is equipped to provide the diagnostics needed for effective treatment.
  • Chest/Lungs: Vital for diagnosing respiratory issues, infections, or injuries, our chest and lung X-rays provide crucial insights into your pulmonary health.
  • Spine: Including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions, our spinal X-rays can help diagnose issues related to back pain, injuries, or degenerative conditions, facilitating targeted treatment plans.
  • Skull: We also offer X-rays for the head or nose, crucial for assessing injuries or conditions affecting the skull and facial structure.

What is the pricing for X-Ray

Location of Service: X-rays at Vitality Urgent Care are significantly less expensive than those performed in an Emergency Room (ER). Most X-rays (up to 2 views) are available as add-ons to office visits priced at $60, making this critical diagnostic tool both accessible and affordable. This pricing model ensures that the additional cost of an X-ray does not become a barrier to receiving the care you need.

Seamless Integration of Care

When you visit Vitality Urgent Care for a medical concern, the ability to add an X-ray to your office visit streamlines your care process. This integration means you can receive a comprehensive evaluation and necessary diagnostics under one roof, without the need for multiple appointments or locations. Our digital X-ray technology enhances this experience, offering quick and clear images that aid in accurate diagnoses.

The Advantage of Digital X-Rays at Vitality

Choosing to have your X-ray as an add-on to your office visit at Vitality Urgent Care not only saves you money but also capitalizes on the benefits of digital X-ray technology. Digital X-rays offer several advantages over traditional film X-rays, including:

  • Faster Results: Digital images are available almost immediately, allowing for quicker diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • Better Quality Images: Enhanced image quality helps in making more accurate diagnoses.
  • Cost Savings: The efficiency and reduced material use of digital X-rays contribute to their affordability.

No Appointment Necessary, Just Walk-In

At Vitality Urgent Care, we understand that health concerns don’t always follow a schedule. That’s why our services, including X-rays as add-ons, require no appointments. You can walk in for an office visit and, if necessary, receive an X-ray during the same visit, ensuring that your health concerns are addressed promptly and efficiently.

RSV treatment and prevention

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Symptoms, Prevention, Treatment

RSV symptoms: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that can affect individuals of all ages, with most children experiencing it by age 2. While typically mild in adults and older children, RSV can cause severe complications in infants, older adults, and people with compromised immune systems. RSV typically follows a seasonal pattern, with outbreaks commonly occurring in fall, peaking in winter, and concluding in early spring. This seasonality is crucial for understanding the timing of preventative measures and heightened awareness.

Symptoms of RSV

Symptoms usually appear 4-6 days post-exposure, presenting as mild cold-like symptoms in adults and older children, such as:

RSV Symptoms in Kids:

  • Rapid, shallow breathing
  • Difficulty in breathing, indicated by chest retractions
  • Persistent coughing or wheezing
  • Poor feeding and decreased activity
  • Irritability and unusual tiredness (lethargy)

RSV Symptoms in Adults:

  • Congested or runny nose
  • Dry cough
  • Low-grade fever
  • Mild sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Headache

Older Adults:

  • Similar symptoms to adults, but with higher risk of severe complications
  • Increased breathing difficulties
  • Higher risk of developing pneumonia or bronchitis
  • Potential cyanosis (bluish color of the skin due to lack of oxygen

Transmission and Risk Factors for RSV

RSV is highly contagious through respiratory droplets. Young children, especially in childcare, and adults over 65, or those with chronic health conditions are at higher risk.

Prevention and Protection

Effective prevention during virus season includes:

  • Regular handwashing.
  • Avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
  • Disinfecting surfaces.
  • Not sharing utensils and cups.
  • Maintaining smoke-free environments.
  • Cleaning toys frequently.

Vaccination and Protective Measures

  • During Pregnancy: Vaccination in late pregnancy is recommended to provide passive immunity to the infant.
  • Infants: Specific vaccination protocols are in place for young infants, particularly those at high risk or born during RSV season.
  • Older Adults: Vaccination for older adults, especially those with chronic health conditions, to reduce the risk of severe RSV complications.

Vitality Urgent Care’s Role in RSV Management

Vitality Urgent Care is essential in managing Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), particularly during peak seasons. Our services include:

  • Rapid Testing: We provide quick and accurate RSV testing, crucial for timely diagnosis and distinguishing RSV from similar respiratory illnesses like flu and COVID-19.
  • Age-Specific Treatment: Understanding that RSV impacts different age groups uniquely, Vitality Urgent Care offers tailored treatment plans. These are based on patient’s age, severity of symptoms, and individual health needs.
  • Preventive Guidance: The care team also advises on managing symptoms at home and preventive measures to curb the spread of RSV. This includes hygiene practices, avoiding contact with infected individuals, and recommendations for household safety. Recognizing RSV symptoms and implementing prevention methods is vital for protecting vulnerable groups. Vitality Urgent Care plays a crucial role in providing rapid testing and treatment guidance, ensuring the best care for those at risk of RSV.
Concussions

The ABCs of Concussions: A Parent’s Guide for School Sports Safety

The excitement is in the air as children head back to school and sports. But as parents, how prepared are we for the potential risks like concussions that come with the territory? This guide will help you understand the ins and outs of concussion management.

Initial Assessment: What to Watch For If you’re ever on the sidelines and something seems off with your child, remember the golden rule: “When in doubt, sit them out!” Watch for subtle signs like delayed verbal responses, discoordination, or emotional shifts.

Diagnosis: More Than a Bump It’s not merely a bump on the head; a concussion involves a change in memory or mental status. Recognize that diagnosis can sometimes take time, especially if symptoms don’t manifest immediately.

Cognitive Rest: Debunking the Myths Think cognitive rest is essential for recovery? Think again. If your child doesn’t experience symptom worsening during cognitive activities like reading, then it’s generally fine for them to continue.

Neuropsych Testing: Helpful but Limited Though valuable for concussion management, neuropsych testing doesn’t predict the length of recovery and isn’t usually a factor in deciding on neuroimaging.

Long-term Risks: Unraveling the Connection Concerned about long-term risks? While there’s a correlation between neurocognitive diseases and repeated concussions, the relationship is complex and likely involves various factors like genetics.

Return-to-Play: A Step-By-Step Guide To get your child safely back into sports, follow a step-wise approach. Your child should be symptom-free for at least 24 hours at each stage before progressing to the next.

Your child’s safety is our priority. Being well-informed about concussions can make all the difference.

Understanding STIs: An In-Depth Look at Prevention, Risk Factors, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Updated: July 24th, 2023

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sometimes referred to as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections that are primarily passed from person to person during sexual contact. The most common STIs identified worldwide are gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), HIV/AIDS, and trichomoniasis, as well as emerging STIs like Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma. Grasping their symptoms, knowing the right time to test and retest for these infections, understanding treatment options, and acknowledging the importance of retesting—even after successful treatment—can greatly impact your sexual health management.

Symptoms of Most Common STIs

Although some STIs can show no symptoms, below are common symptoms associated with each infection:

  • Gonorrhea and Chlamydia: Symptoms may include unusual discharge, a burning sensation during urination, and in men, pain or swelling in one or both testicles. Women may experience pain during intercourse, lower abdominal pain, or a low-grade fever.
  • Syphilis: This infection often begins as a painless sore on the genitals, rectum, or mouth. As it progresses, it can lead to rashes, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue.
  • Herpes: Herpes is characterized by outbreaks of blisters and sores around the mouth or genital area. The virus stays dormant in the body between outbreaks.
  • HPV: Some types of HPV can lead to genital warts, while others may not cause symptoms but can lead to various cancers.
  • HIV/AIDS: Early symptoms of HIV/AIDS include flu-like symptoms. As it progresses, it can lead to weight loss, fever, night sweats, and fatigue.
  • Trichomoniasis: This STI can cause itching or irritation inside the penis, burning after urination or ejaculation, and some discharge from the penis in men. Women might notice itching, burning, redness or soreness of the genitals, discomfort with urination, or a thin discharge with an unusual smell that can be clear, white, yellowish, or greenish.
  • Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma: Many individuals with these infections don’t experience symptoms. However, when present, symptoms can include burning or pain during urination, urethritis, or more complex reproductive and urinary tract disorders.

Testing and Retesting for STIs

Determining the right time to test for an STI post-exposure depends on the specific infection. General guidelines are:

  • Gonorrhea and Chlamydia: Test 5 days weeks after exposure or for any symptoms.
  • Syphilis: Test 1-3 weeks for primary syphilis.
  • Herpes: Test 2 weeks to 3 months after exposure.
  • HPV: No approved test for men; women should have regular screenings as part of Pap tests.
  • HIV: Test 1-3 months after exposure.
  • Trichomoniasis: Most people are diagnosed when a partner reports symptoms; testing can occur as soon as symptoms are reported.
  • Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma: Testing should be considered if you have symptoms or risk factors like multiple sexual partners or unprotected sex.

Retesting after treatment is crucial to ensure the infection has been completely eradicated and to check for potential reinfections.

Treatment Options

Treatment plans differ based on the STI:

  • Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, and Trichomoniasis: These bacterial infections are typically treated with antibiotics.
  • Herpes and HIV: These viral infections can’t be cured, but their symptoms can be managed with antiviral medications.
  • HPV: Treatment often focuses on managing symptoms and regular monitoring for potential cancer development.
  • Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma: These infections are generally treated with antibiotics; however, antibiotic resistance can be an issue, particularly with Mycoplasma genitalium.

Understanding the intricacies of STIs, from their symptoms to their treatment options, is essential for managing your sexual health. Always remember the mantra: “Get tested, get treated, and get retested”. Knowing your status empowers you to maintain a healthy lifestyle and make informed choices.

To support your sexual health management, consider getting tested today at our partner labs, which provide low-cost, fast turnaround time, and easy scheduling for your convenience. Knowing your status not only empowers you to make informed choices but also contributes to overall health.

Common Summer Rashes

Navigating Through Common Summer Rashes

Updated: June 15th, 2023

Summer is a delightful season filled with picnics, swimming, hiking, and soaking up the sun. However, the joy of summer can sometimes be marred by the onset of uncomfortable skin rashes. These rashes can be caused by a range of factors including heat, sun exposure, plants, and waterborne parasites. In this in-depth guide, we will explore the symptoms and treatments of common summer rashes, highlighting the services of Vitality Urgent Care in providing effective and timely treatment.

Recognizing and Treating Common Summer Rashes

  1. Heat Rash (Prickly Heat): Heat rash is a common issue in hot, humid weather, particularly in individuals who sweat profusely. The condition occurs when sweat ducts become blocked, trapping the sweat under the skin. Symptoms can include small blisters or red lumps, and a prickly or intense itching sensation, often in areas where clothing causes friction.Treatment: Keeping the skin cool and dry is a primary step. Using an over-the-counter calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream can alleviate the itching. In severe cases, a medical practitioner may prescribe stronger treatments like topical steroids.
  2. Sun Rash (Solar Dermatitis): Sun rash is a reaction to excessive exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. It’s common in people who are photosensitive. Symptoms usually include a red, itchy rash that can develop into blisters or hives on the sun-exposed areas of skin.Treatment: Mild cases can be treated with cold compresses, soothing creams, and aloe vera. Severe cases may require topical steroids or antihistamines. Avoiding sun exposure and using sunblock are effective preventive measures.
  3. Swimmer’s Itch: Also known as cercarial dermatitis, swimmer’s itch is an allergic reaction to microscopic parasites that infest freshwater lakes and ponds. The parasites can penetrate the skin, causing red, itchy bumps or blisters.Treatment: Over-the-counter creams and antihistamines can help relieve the itching. In more severe cases, a healthcare provider may recommend prescription-strength creams or pills.
  4. Plant Rashes (Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, and Poison Sumac): These rashes are an allergic response to the oil, urushiol, found in these plants. The rash typically presents as a red, itchy rash that can blister, and it follows a linear pattern where the plant brushed against the skin.Treatment: Rinsing the skin immediately after contact can reduce the severity. Topical creams and oral antihistamines can relieve the itching. In severe cases, you may need prescription medication from a healthcare provider.

At Vitality Urgent Care, we are dedicated to providing immediate, high-quality care for all your summer health concerns, including pesky skin rashes. Our skilled healthcare professionals can promptly diagnose these rashes and initiate appropriate treatment.

In addition to offering over-the-counter solutions, we can provide prescription treatments for severe or persistent rashes. Our team is equipped to prescribe topical steroids, oral steroids, and antibiotics if a rash is severe, widespread, or infected. We also provide education about preventive measures and skincare routines to minimize the risk of summer rashes.

Urgent Care Today

Emergency Department or Urgent Care Center?

Updated: March 20th, 2023

Urgent care centers and emergency rooms are two most common options for medical care but with important differences. It is crucial to understand the differences between these facilities to make informed decisions about where to seek medical care. Below we will explore the differences and determine which option is best for your needs.

Urgent care centers are designed to provide medical care for non-life-threatening conditions that require attention but are not serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room. Urgent Care facilities typically open extended hours, including weekends and holidays, making them a convenient option for patients who cannot get an appointment with their primary care physician or who need medical attention outside of regular office hours.

Emergency rooms, on the other hand, are designed to provide immediate medical attention to patients with life-threatening conditions or severe injuries that require more extensive medical care. Emergency rooms are open 24/7, and they have the resources and equipment necessary to handle a wide range of medical emergencies.

Key Differences Between Emergency and Urgent Care Centers

  • Severity of Condition: Urgent care centers are designed to treat non-life-threatening conditions such as minor cuts, sprains, and colds, while emergency rooms are equipped to handle life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and severe injuries.
  • Wait Times: Urgent care centers typically have shorter wait times than emergency rooms, and patients are often seen within an hour of arrival. Emergency rooms, on the other hand, prioritize patients based on the severity of their condition, so wait times can be much longer.
  • Cost: Urgent care centers are generally less expensive than emergency rooms, and typically accept most insurances. Emergency rooms, on the other hand, can be very expensive, and patients may be responsible for a large portion of the bill if they don’t have adequate insurance coverage.
  • Equipment and Resources: While urgent care centers have basic medical equipment, emergency rooms are equipped with more advanced equipment such as CT scanners and MRI machines, as well as a wide range of medical specialists.

Summary of Key Differences

Urgent Care Centers Emergency Rooms
Severity of Condition Non-life-threatening Life-threatening or severe injuries
Wait Times Shorter wait times Longer wait times
Cost Less expensive More expensive
Equipment and Resources Basic medical equipment Advanced equipment

Nausea from stomach bug or food poisoning?

Updated: March 7th, 2023

We all experience stomach troubles from time to time, but when you’re hit with sudden and severe symptoms, it can be hard to know what’s causing your discomfort. Two common culprits of acute gastrointestinal distress are stomach bugs and food poisoning. While both can cause similar symptoms, they have different causes, treatments, and prevention methods.

Let’s dive into the differences between a stomach bug and food poisoning, how to identify which one you might have, and what to do about.

Stomach Bugs:

  • Caused by a viral infection in the stomach and intestines
  • Highly contagious and can spread through contact with infected individuals, contaminated food or water, or touching contaminated surfaces
  • Symptoms usually develop within 1-3 days of exposure and can last up to 10 days
  • Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, and fatigue
  • Treatment typically involves rest, staying hydrated, and over-the-counter medications like anti-nausea or anti-diarrhea drugs
  • Prevention methods include washing hands frequently, avoiding contact with sick individuals, and thoroughly cooking and storing food properly

Food Poisoning:

  • Caused by consuming contaminated food or drink
  • Can be caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or toxins produced by bacteria or other microorganisms
  • Symptoms can develop within a few hours to a few days of consuming contaminated food and usually last up to 48 hours
  • Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, and headache
  • Treatment typically involves rest, staying hydrated, and sometimes antibiotics or other medications to relieve symptoms
  • Prevention methods include thoroughly cooking and storing food properly, washing hands and surfaces often, and avoiding cross-contamination of food

How to Identify Which One You Might Have:

  • Consider the timing of your symptoms. Stomach bugs usually have a longer incubation period, while food poisoning symptoms can develop quickly after consuming contaminated food.
  • Think about any recent exposure to potential sources of infection. Did you recently travel or come into contact with someone who was sick? Did you consume any questionable food or drink? Did you take antibiotics recently?
  • Consider the severity of your symptoms. Stomach bugs can cause severe symptoms but tend to resolve on their own within a week or so. Food poisoning symptoms can also be severe but typically resolve within 48 hours.

What to Do About It:

  • Stay hydrated. Both stomach bugs and food poisoning can cause dehydration, so it’s important to drink plenty of fluids to replace any lost fluids.
  • Rest. Your body needs time to recover, so it’s important to take it easy and get plenty of rest.
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms are severe or last longer than a few days. Vitality Urgent Care may be able to prescribe medication to relieve symptoms or provide further treatment if necessary.
  • Take steps to prevent the spread of infection. If you suspect you have a stomach bug, avoid contact with others and wash your hands frequently. If you suspect food poisoning, dispose of any remaining contaminated food properly and clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with it.

Take Away:

While stomach bugs and food poisoning can cause similar symptoms, they have different causes and treatment methods. By understanding the differences between the two and taking steps to prevent infection, you can minimize your risk of developing gastrointestinal distress. If you’re experiencing severe symptoms or symptoms that last longer than a few days, it’s important to seek medical attention to ensure proper treatment. Vitality Urgent Care providers are knowledgeable in treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and ready to get you better faster.

Sunburn Treatment

Sunburn Treatment Made Simple

While we are excited finally getting the swimsuits and getting out for a nice pleasant natural tanning experience. Too much sunbathing can actually be very dangerous to your skin in a way of causing sunburn, contribute to fasted skin aging and cause other complications such as skin cancer.

However, if you do get a sunburn, there are few things that can be done to alleviate the symptoms.

Taking A Bath with Cool Water:

The very first thing that you can do as soon as you get a sunburn, is to cool your body down. If you’re at the beach or a pool, then try taking a short swim into the water and let your skin cool down. It’s better to just dip yourself in water than applying any soap or body wash as the chemicals might worsen your skin condition. Just make sure that you are not in contact with the water for too long as it might make your skin very dry.

Applying Aloe Vera Gel:

Even after taking a shower you may have a burning sensation on the sunburn area. One of the best ways to soothe your skin is to apply an Aloe Vera cream or gel . With its soothing properties, Aloe Vera not only treats the sunburn, but it also moisturizes the skin by the presence of active components, like Salicylic acid, vitamins, and minerals.

Let the Skin Blisters Heal on Their Own:

Sunburn can also cause blisters all over the skin, but don’t worry as this is a part of the healing process. While many of you might get irritated by this, do not pop the blister as they are protecting your skin from catching germs or infection from somewhere else. You can try wearing loose clothes which lets air pass through.

 Stay Hydrated:

Staying hydrated is one of the most important steps in healing sunburn process. Your skin needs water to regenerate and to become more elastic. It is recommended to drink at least 2 liters of water per day.

Get your children outside!

Spring is here and it is time to get children outside. Research has shown that there are many benefits to children playing outdoors, here are few benefits!

Learning -Playing outside helps children to develop their learning abilities. By putting educational equipment outdoors, children are soon learning through play, which is a fun way of helping children to learn new information and skills. As well as this, outdoor learning encourages children to think of learning is an ongoing process instead of just something done in the classroom.

Creativity -Outdoor play is great for encouraging children’s creativity. Away from the constraints and confinement of indoor play, being outside children’s imaginations are often stimulated by the objects around them and they quickly tap into their creativity.

Health -There are numerous health benefits to playing outside. With more room to play in, children are often more active when outside, which helps them to build strong bones and good fitness levels, while also enabling them to burn off extra energy and calories. As well as this, being in the sunshine, even in winter, means children naturally absorb vital vitamin D, a lack of which can lead to Rickets.

Social skills – As outdoor spaces are usually less crowded than indoors, it is less intimidating and helps children to naturally come out of their shells and be more social. This means that children will be more willing to join in games and activities, while they will also be more likely to talk to different children and make new friends. This all encourages children to learn social skills and how to interact with other children away from adult supervision.

Well-being – Giving children the freedom of playing outdoor helps them to feel happier and calmer. As already stated, being outside means that children naturally get vitamin D, which is proven to help improve moods and create a positive mental attitude. The freedom outdoor play also encourages children to get rid of built up energy, particularly if they tend to be fidgety when sitting for long periods of time, this leads to them becoming calmer and ultimately helps them to be more focused when in the classroom.

Independence– The large space in which to play means that when outside children are often away from direct adult supervision. This helps them to learn independence when socially interacting with other children, as well as learning to play by themselves. They learn how to take turns playing games, to pick themselves up then they fall, and how to negotiate unfamiliar equipment, resulting in children learning how to be independent and self-reliant.

Explore – Often outdoor play equipment has a little more risk than indoor toys. Whether it is encouraging children to use slides they might be a little afraid to go down, or to try challenging play trails; outdoor play equipment can help children to learn to push their boundaries and become good at risk assessment. It also teaches them to explore new games and become confident in learning to try new things without being guided by adults.

  2. Glow in the Dark Bowling – Pop glow sticks into 10 bottles of water to make bowling pins you can use at night.
  3. Obstacle Course – Use objects you already own like jump ropes, boxes and hula-hoops to create a backyard course. Your kids will be entertained and put their skills to the test. Encourage your children to change up the course with their own ideas.
  4. Lawn Twister – Use circular stencils and spray paint the game board onto your lawn for outdoor fun.
  5. Balloon Volleyball – Set up your court by using a jump rope (or any rope) to divide your yard in two. Use a balloon for the ball and have players alternate serves. The first to 21 is the winner!

Back to Nature

  1. Favorite Park – Get a map of your local parks. Visit them all and vote for your favorite one.
  2. Stargazing – Learn about the constellations and print out a few star maps. One night you can spread out a blanket and look for these recognizable groups of stars.
  3. Nature Walk – Go for a walk and collect items from Mother Nature. Back at home make a collage out of the found items.
  4. Picnic at a Park – Take the kids to a state or national park to teach them the importance of preserving beautiful land. Take a journal or sketch pad along to document the experience.
  5. Farmer’s Market Visit – It’s a great opportunity to sneak in a little education about nutrition and get them more interested in the food they eat. Let your children pick something new to try.
  6. Camp Out in Your Backyard – Your family can enjoy the great outdoors with the comforts of home close by. Build a fire to roast hot dogs and melt marshmallows for s’mores.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

As the name suggests, this skin condition affects the hands, foot, and mouth. This condition manifests in the form of blisters and painful oral ulcers. Notably, it is highly contagious and can be spread from child to child easily. To help the child get better, keep them hydrated, pain control and ensure that they are well fed.

Urinary Tract Infection

How to Recognize the Symptoms of a Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infection is a UTI. It is caused by germs getting into the urinary tract. The urinary tract is made up of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The urethra is a tube at the bottom of the bladder. Urine flows out of this tube. The germs enter the urethra and then spread in the bladder. Urinary tract infections are much more common in women.

Types of urinary tract infections

  • Bladder infection is when the lower urinary tract is infected.
  • Kidney infection is in the upper urinary tract.

Signs of Urinary Tract Infection

  • Pain during urination
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Urinating more frequently
  • Soreness over the bladder or lower abdominal muscles
  • Strong odor
  • Cloudy Urine
  • Blood in urine

Signs and symptoms that may indicate a further spread of infection to kidney or blood may present as:

  • Back pain
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Nausea or vomiting
If you have any of these symptoms, tell your healthcare provider right away. Kidney infections are serious. They need to be treated promptly.

How can UTIs be prevented?

After a bowel movement or after urinating, wipe from front to back.
Wash the skin around the anus and the genital area.
Avoid using douches, powder, and deodorant sprays.
Drink plenty of fluids (including water) to flush bacteria out of your urinary system.
Empty your bladder as soon as you feel the urge or about every 2–3 hours.
Try to empty your bladder before and after sex.
Wear underwear with a cotton crotch.

Treatment or Urinary Tract Infections

If you are experiencing any common symptoms of UTIs or suspect you may have a UTI, your best course of action is to get a urine test with Vitality Urgent and Primary Care. Our team will help assess the seriousness of the infection and, if necessary, prescribe an appropriate course of antibiotics. This will keep the infection from spreading to the kidneys, where it can become serious or even life-threatening.

Is it already the Influenza (Flu) season?

Is it already the Influenza (Flu) season?

Influenza, or flu, is an infection caused by the influenza virus. It affects your throat, breathing tube, and lungs (the respiratory system). It spreads from a person who is sick to some other person from close contact. Flu may cause rapid onset of:

  • Fever over 100.4°F (38°C)
  • Chills
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sore throat Tiredness
  • Throwing up

How Does the Flu Differ From the Common Cold?

Flu and the common cold are very similar, but the flu is like the common cold on steroids. Even in a healthy adult, influenza can become life-threatening due to various complications such as:

  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Heart problems

A cold, on the other hand, tends to be milder and less likely to cause serious complications. Simply put, when you have the flu, you will feel much worse. For most individuals, the flu symptoms start to disappear in about five to seven days after illness onset.

How to prevent or fight the Flu?

  • Keep your hands away from your nose, eyes, and mouth
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 15 seconds, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers also work to kill the virus.
  • Do not get too close (kissing, hugging) to people who are sick.
  • Do not share cups, food, drinks, or silverware with anyone who is sick.
  • Get a flu shot each year.
  • If you think that you may have flu call your health care provider to inquire about early initiation of antiviral therapy.

The Bottom Line

When you’re dealing with symptoms of Flu-Like symptoms and you want a quick relief of your symptoms. While there are plenty of things you can do yourself to help your body heal and prevent further infections, the best course of action is usually to have an evaluation by a medical professional and possible prescription of anti-viral medication. If you don’t relish the thought of taking time out of your day to sit in a germy waiting room, order urgent care visit to your home and relax at home instead!

Google Reviews for Urgent Care Used the medical house call for my elderly mother and myself. We were sick and did not feel like going to the emergency room. The experience with the provider was excellent. The Nurse Practitioner that was taking care of us was really nice and informative about the plan of care. Greatly recommend for anybody in need of urgent medical attention.

Elianora Mekler, Schaumburg (Google)

Google Reviews for Urgent Care Thank you Vitality HouseCalls! The service is great. Rod was very courteous and did an excellent job of coming to our house to treat my husband who could not get out of bed. He had exceptional bedside manners and provided us with the first dose of medications so we did not have to travel to pharmacy at night. It was a very positive experience in otherwise stressful situation.

J P. ( Yelp)

I used this service for a severe sinus infection that would not go away. I needed to get looked at on a Saturday, so it was very convenient to have Vitality Mobile Urgent Care come to my home. The Doctor even called me the next day (which I did not expect) to check up on how I was feeling. I needed a change in antibiotics and she called it right away into my pharmacy! The fee was the same I would have paid anywhere else and much lower than an ER visit. Thanks, Vitality Mobile Urgent Care!

Artem S. ( Yelp)

The medical house calls service is amazing. We used the service at least three times due to convenience. It is easier than conventional urgent care and less expensive than most regular doctors visits. The visit usually lasts about 30 minutes and the doctor is very calm and attentive. We will definitely use the service again.

Galina T., Rosemont ( Yelp)

I was visiting Chicago area for work and staying at Rosemont. After eating and in a local restaurant I develop some kind of stomach sickness and needed urgent medical attention. I was not sure where to go or what to do, so I googled urgent care and was pleasantly surprised to find the service they provided. I was seen within 1 hour, right in my hotel room. The medical provider was very attentive, he examined me and quickly diagnosed me with a stomach virus. I was planning to go to the local emergency room and the medical house call service definitely save me time and money. thank you.

Aleksandr K. ( Yelp)

I was suffering from a bad sinus infection on Sunday and contemplating about going to emergency room. Saw multiple yelp reviewed for medical house calls and thought to give it a try. Scheduling appointments were really easy, i was seen in about 1 hour. The doc asked me multiple questions about my health and current symptoms. He was able to accurately diagnose the problem and send electronic prescription. He even gave me his personal phone to call for any questions. Follow up call 2 days later was greatly appreciated.

Impact Medical House Calls

What the Research Says About the Impact of House Calls on Patients

A slowly growing body of literature on the impact of medical house call programs concludes that these programs are effective in reducing hospital and emergency room use and improving patient quality of life and well-being. A 1999 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that elderly house call participants reduced their use of hospitals by 65 percent with cost savings of 50 percent over similar patients who receive their care through a traditional office-based practice.1 A 2004 study of a medical house call program in the mid west found that the program: (1) improved patients’ medication and health management; (2) helped families feel  more informed about the patients’ medical conditions and relieved of the burden of transporting patients to the doctors; (3) reduced hospital and emergency services use; and (4) enabled far more patients to die at home rather than in a hospital. The study also interviewed office-based physicians who expressed relief that they could concentrate on caring for their patient caseload without worrying about managing complex homebound patients over the phone.2 A 2006 evaluation of the Visiting Nurses Association of Cleveland’s house call program found the program helped in preventing functional decline and reduced hospitalizations. Patients and referral sources also expressed high levels of satisfaction with the program.
